A minimum of thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
