The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
