RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
