The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday commercial created with AI after receiving widespread criticism on social media.

The 45-second spot was produced with the help of AI video tools and was initially released on the YouTube channel for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Social Media Reaction and Decision to Pull

Shortly after its release, viewers on social media lambasted the implementation of AI in the advert. A number of described it as "creepy" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience represents an important learning as we explore the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," stated a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It depicted various things that often go badly over the holidays, with the theme "the worst time of the year".

The Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Adverts that include AI-created content have emerged as a rising phenomenon among prominent corporations, notably for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has similarly launched consecutive AI-created Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos created using current AI video tools are more likely to distort the longer they run, most such clips tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked fears about automation in the creative industry, with some observers stating it could affect work for production staff.

Defense from the Production Company

After the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

According to her, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved creating "thousands of takes" which were then shaped during the edit "in the same way we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't an experiment," she said. "The result was a finished piece."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was mostly panned, the sentiment for other AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a significant "favorable response" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise encountered scrutiny for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident illustrates the evolving debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the trade-off between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
