A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.
Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.
Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.
The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.
Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.
Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.
America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
