The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
