Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
